Aftercare

In recent years, our weather has become increasingly unpredictable. With long dry periods in spring and extremely hot summers, our trees suffer more than they used to. Especially freshly planted trees show more prominent reactions to improper care and take a longer time to recover. Providing them with professional aftercare has never been more important.

A tree that has a rough start immediately after planting, will be stressed and react badly to hot and dry periods. If that tree does not recover in time for winter, this reaction might continue to impact its following growing seasons.

Even if your tree survives a difficult start in life, the loss of energy will make him more vulnerable to all kinds of pests and diseases for many years to come.

We compare a tree’s soil to a human’s stomach. Healthy soil life is the foundation for a strong immune system. A healthy and balanced soil is easily as important as the presence of the right nutrients and the correct amount of water.

The purpose of good aftercare is to stimulate optimal root growth. This involves multiple factors.

Oxygen is a crucial element in root growth. As the growing season progresses, the roots require a higher oxygen level. This means it is important to let the soil breathe after watering. For this reason, we don’t strive for a constant humidity level, but rather switch between wet and dry periods. This variation in humidity stimulates a healthy soil life.

Lastly, we recommend trimming your freshly planted trees to reduce the number of buds. Not a fan of trimming your trees yourself? In that case, we are happy to recommend a colleague.

Eager to find out what your soil needs? Jan is happy to take a look and provide you with all the information you require.

Standing People.be offers various levels of aftercare, to suit your specific needs.

1. Mentoring

Will a team be taking care of the planted trees? Or will you do this yourself? Standing People.be is happy to get you started and guide you through the aftercare process.

  • We inform the team responsible for the aftercare with clear instructions.

  • We perform the first irrigation with you and use this as a reference to determine the right amount of water and frequency of watering.

  • We monitor the situation and are available for questions.

  • If necessary, we can provide you with irrigation bags and explain their use.

2. Complete aftercare

We are more than happy to take on the entire aftercare for your green space. This way, your trees will be in their best possible condition, and you don’t have to worry about them.

  • We start with the first irrigation and use this as a reference to determine the right amount of water and frequency of watering.

  • We water your trees with our irrigation bags and remove them after each watering. Their use is included in our fee.

3. Troubleshooting

Are you experiencing trouble with trees we did not plant or monitor? You can count on us to investigate the situation and help you improve it.

  • We measure the humidity in the soil and root ball on which we base our further action.

  • If necessary, we perform an emergency watering which only hydrates the root ball.

  • In case of high humidity, we perform an emergency drainage.

  • In some cases, we conduct a soil analysis.

  • If the soil analysis shows the soil is not sufficient, we perform structural improvements.

  • If trimming needs to be done, we are happy to contact a colleague.

4. Preparing for winter

Towards the end of September, trees and their soil start to prepare themselves for colder days ahead. This is a process we are more than happy to supervise.

  • We add a layer of mulch to give your trees a warm blanket for the cold months and a boost of energy for the next growing season.

  • Flower bulbs, such as snowdrops and daffodils, aren’t just pretty to look at. They contribute immensely to a healthy soil. They should be planted during this period.
